Alliance
Telecom Solutions Celebrates 15th Anniversary
Gurnee,
Illinois, December 17, 2009 —
Alliance Telecom Solutions is proud to complete its 15th year in
business with most of its current management team serving more
than 10 years.
President Richard McFarlane reflected, “Our history mirrors
the telecom industry’s history and can be viewed as having
several distinct periods. Most of us have long forgotten
what it was like when there was duopoly in telecom markets.
We started Alliance in 1994, which coincided with the C-band
auctions and a tremendous expansion in new players.”
Alliance worked with many of those new players, including seven
of the nine companies that chose the GSM technology. The
firm specialized in BSS/OSS selection and implementation,
exhibiting deep expertise in Kenan, Saville, Convergys, MetaSolv,
BSCS, and ProfitLine. Key clients from those early years
included Ameritech Cellular, Aerial Communications, BellSouth
Mobile, and Powertel, all now gone by way of merger.
By 1996 Alliance was operating in North America, South America,
Europe, Taiwan and Dubai. The company achieved
quarter-to-quarter growth every quarter between 1994 and 2000.
2000 brought the recession. “Telecom was the poster
child of the 2000 recession, as banking is to today’s
recession,” said Mr. McFarlane. “Sound finances kept
us in business but we had declining revenues through 2003 and
we’ve been rebuilding ever since.”
Some of the firm’s key clients have retired or left the
business through consolidation and some are still here.
Several of them commented on their experience in the industry
during the past 15 years.
Richard Hevert, a longtime Alliance client at T-Mobile and Bell
South, is an industry veteran, logging 20 years in telecom.
“I think the two biggest industry changes are the migration
from the IBM mainframe computing environment to a distributed,
server-based environment, and the transition from landline to
wireless telecom,” said Mr. Hevert. “This industry is
fast paced and we’re always on the bleeding edge.
Personally, I’ve enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie
I’ve experienced running into the same people all these years.
I’ve known Richard since 1996 and have found Alliance to have
extremely talented, experienced consultants who are
thought-provoking and very professional.”
Chuck Johnson, now with Amdocs, goes back more than ten years in
telecom. “There have been so many changes in this
industry,” he said. “Consolidations are continuing and
accelerating, data services are exploding, billing vendors have
much more complexity with managing gateways to the network and
settlements, IT is getting outsourced and off-shored (which is
quite difficult to do well), and on the handset side smart
devices are everywhere. Who but Steve Jobs would have
expected the iPhone to capture 50% of the market and dwarf even
the Motorola Razr? This industry is fast paced, has
fascinating technology, is very customer-focused and is
intensely competitive. I’ve worked with Alliance at
BellSouth and T-Mobile and had a wonderful experience, one that
I expect to repeat.”
Mr. McFarlane summed up, “While maintaining our telecom
specialization and business model as cornerstones for 15 years,
we have adapted to new client structures and the consolidation
of vendors. We believe that being a small, focused company
allows us to bring our clients highly experienced consultants
who solve problems and transfer knowledge. Our special
thanks goes to our clients who see the value we provide have
made a particular effort to keep us as a consulting option.”
